Remove irregularities, asymmetries and deformities that make your ears stand out
Although large and floppy ears do not pose any health problems, their size and position can cause discomfort and insecurity in public settings.
Although large and floppy ears do not pose any health problems, their size and position can cause discomfort and insecurity in public settings.
That is why at the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic we perform surgical correction of the ears, better known as otoplasty.
Otoplasty successfully treats issue such as asymmetries, deformities and protruding ears, and due to the minimal invasiveness and durability of tissue shaping, you can expect a quick recovery and results that last for years.
With an acceptable price for ear surgery, which can be paid in installments, many of our clients have decided to undergo this procedure in order to eliminate the appearance of large ears once and for all and drastically change their opinion about their own appearance.
Otoplasty offers many advantages that can be clearly noticed when we correct the irregular or disproportionate shape of the ears.
Some of the main benefits of ear surgery include:
The appearance of enlarged earlobes, better known as macrothia, can negatively accentuate your appearance, shifting all attention from the face to the enlarged ears. By correcting the ears, we successfully treat macrotia, shrinking the auricle and adjusting it to your facial dimensions.
Protruding ears occur when the angle between the auricle and the head is too wide. With ear surgery, we successfully reduce this angle by cutting and shaping the cartilage tissue that is responsible for this appearance of the ear.
Otoplasty is also performed in the case of poorly performed ear surgeries. With careful analysis, we observe the places where mistakes have occurred and try to correct them with as few visible scars as possible.
Ear correction can be carried out when we strive to achieve their symmetrical appearance. Despite the fact that completely symmetrical faces are almost non-existent, by correcting the ears, we can reduce the existing asymmetries as much as possible and provide a more regular and proportional look.
Due to minimal invasiveness on the back of the auricle, the scars after the operation are barely visible, and due to the small amount of cartilage tissue removed, the recovery period is shorter than other more serious surgical procedures.
Due to the removal and fixation of cartilage tissue, the results of the operation are permanent. Cartilage tissue stops developing in childhood (7 years), so the chances of a corrected auricle becoming protruding or irregular again are almost zero.
Ear surgery, like any surgical procedure, requires adherence to certain guidelines and precautions to ensure the effectiveness of the procedure, but also the shortest possible recovery.
Preparation for ear surgery includes the following steps:
Before each surgical procedure, we conduct consultations where we go through the surgery process, the recovery process and the possibility of certain complications.
During the consultation, we also discuss your medical history, previous surgeries and answer all questions related to preparation for the procedure.
Conducting laboratory tests is one of the important steps in preparing for the procedure. By analyzing your blood count, and sometimes ECG findings, we get an insight into your health, heart function and potential blood disorders.
Although ear surgery is mostly performed locally, this procedure can also be performed under general anesthesia in the case when the child is younger or less cooperative.
Then we need an adequate assessment by an anesthesiologist who will give a final word on the use and safety of anesthesia.
Drugs that affect blood clotting should be avoided for at least 2-3 days before the operation. The so-called anticoagulants can complicate the healing process and prolong recovery.
By following these guidelines, we reduce the chances of developing complications and ensure optimal results of the procedure.
Ear surgery may sound like a complex surgical procedure. Nevertheless, by applying proven and routine techniques, this operation does not require risky undertakings that could compromise the final appearance and shape of the auricle.
Once the anesthesia starts working, the surgeon makes a small incision on the back of the auricle.
By widening the resulting incision, the surgeon can more clearly see the cartilage tissue responsible for ear protrusion or some other form of irregularity. Making small incisions removes excess cartilage tissue, thereby reducing the angle between the auricle and the head.
In addition to removing pieces of cartilage tissue, the surgeon can enhance the size of the antihelical fold, a segment located on the inside of the auricle. This increase seeks to achieve stability and proportionality that will make the ear look more natural and closer to the head.
After the incisions are made, the surgeon connects the new segments of the cartilage with internal sutures, then closes the resulting incision at the back of the ear.
The whole procedure takes about 2 hours, and when you recover from the effects of anesthesia, we let you go for home care.
For the first 24 hours after surgery, you should wear a bandage around your ears. The next day, you will come to us for an examination where we will check how the recovery and healing of the wound is progressing.
After removing the bandage, you need to wear an ear band for the next two weeks.
Painkillers may be prescribed. Care should be taken to ensure that these drugs do not affect blood clotting . That is why, at least in the initial phase of recovery, you should avoid medications such as Aspirin or Andol.
8-10 days after the operation, we call you again for an examination to remove your stitches. After removing the seams, we will give you an ear band, which this time you will only use when sleeping. The resulting tape needs to be worn for the next two weeks.
Return to daily activities of lower intensity is possible 2-3 days after the procedure, and you can expect to return to work a week after the surgery. Although the presence of minor swelling is possible, they should not prevent you from carrying out your daily activities.
You can expect a full recovery and return to sports activities a month after surgery.

Otoplasty, like any surgical procedure, can cause the appearance of certain complications that can affect the final results and the recovery process.
These are some of the most common side effects of ear correction:
One of the most common complications we see in patients operated on outside our institution are ears that are overly pinned to the head, i.e. surgical hypercorrection. The goal of the surgery is certainly to avoid this condition, which results in an unnatural position of the ears in relation to the head.
The goal of the operation is to shape the ear beautifully and bring it into a natural position in relation to the head.
In the case of a poorly repaired wound, there is a chance for the penetration of bacteria and the appearance of infections on the skin. These infections are usually treated with antibiotics or by reopening the wound so that the infected area can be cleaned.
The use of drugs that work to clot blood can prolong the recovery process, increasing the chance of bleeding. A poorly repaired wound can also be the cause of heavier bleeding. In the case of such phenomena, it is necessary to reopen and repair the wound.
Although the resulting scars are small and almost imperceptible, there is a chance when their presence may be more visible.
Although one of the main goals of otoplasty is to treat asymmetries, in rare cases new ear asymmetries can occur.
Complications of this type can be prevented by wearing bandages or bandages around the ears, and in some cases by repeating the operation.
The incisions made and the removal of excess cartilage tissue can weaken the structure of the auricle, creating a soft and unstable tissue that is prone to frequent denting and changes in appearance. In such circumstances, we decide to repeat the operation.
It should be noted that these complications are rare and that with adequate preparation, we reduce the chances of their development as much as possible.
This effective procedure will provide long-lasting results by directly affecting your confidence and public appearance. Ear surgery thus fulfills the following goals:
Although large ears do not pose health problems, their irregularity and asymmetry can make them stand out more than other segments of the face.
With the right approach to the procedure, your ears can naturally “merge” with your facial appearance, emphasizing other attractive segments and improving your self-confidence.
At Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic, we are aware of how much appearance can affect a person’s self-confidence, which is why we have gathered an experienced team of surgeons who will provide you with the best ear surgery experience in Zagreb.
By removing excess cartilage tissue, we achieve a natural look of the ears that will no longer stand out when interacting with other people.
Thanks to the fast recovery, long-lasting results, but also the adjustable price of ear correction, this type of surgery is often the preferred option for improving ear appearance.
