Refresh your look with a procedure that will remove dark circles
Lower eyelid surgery or lower blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that repairs and rejuvenates the contours of the lower eyelids, restoring freshness to your face.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle in today’s turbulent and tense environment is becoming an increasing challenge. Unfortunately, our skin is often the first indicator of such a dynamic lifestyle.
Lack of sleep, foods rich in refined sugars, lack of physical activity and stress at work are just some of the factors that can make skin changes more frequent and visible.
The changes we first notice when interacting with other people are often those around the eye area. Trying to maintain eye contact, it is almost impossible not to notice the condition on the lower eyelids – excess skin, excess muscles, or classic dark circles – excess fat.
According to research, swelling around the eyes and dark circles are present in 27% of Americans , making this issue one of the most common changes on the face.
Even when you restore healthy habits and regular sleep, dark circles can linger for a while, creating the wrong impression of fatigue and exhaustion.
Aware of how dark circles can affect your freshness in the face, at the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic we perform lower eyelid surgery as one of the basic surgical procedures of rejuvenation.
Lower eyelid surgery or lower blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that repairs and rejuvenates the contours of the lower eyelids, restoring freshness to your face.
Sometimes we add a fat transfer procedure to the lower blepharoplasty – LIPO TRANSFER in the area of the middle part of the face to get a better final result of rejuvenation of that facial region.
Also, we combine lower blepharoplasty with the most advanced facial skin therapies – MORPHES 8 and the ResurFX laser, which further rejuvenate the skin of the face and reduce swelling – malar edema.
This procedure is often performed with upper eyelid surgery, but also in combination with other procedures such as eyebrow lift or complete facelift – LF FULL FACE surgery.
Depending on the problem we want to solve on the lower eyelid – excess skin, muscle relaxation or excess fat, we use various types of lower blepharoplasty surgery.
The most modern technique of lower blepharoplasty is called EXTENDED LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY , which can preserve fat through a small incision in the skin under the eyelashes and use it as a natural filler of the middle part of the face, release the orbicularis muscle and place it on a higher position of the face and remove excess skin.
In this way, we can truly reconstruct all segments of eyelid aging and ensure a long-term excellent and natural result.
Also, when performing this technique, we additionally strengthen the lower eyelids with a procedure called CANTOPEXY – stabilization of the outer edge of the eyelid to a higher position, which makes the eyes fresher. Some call this procedure cat eyes, but in our hands it is performed primarily in a natural way to prevent lowering of the edge of the eyelid, and not hypercorrection.
Closed blepharoplasty (transconjunctival) is used when we try to remove a small part of the adipose tissue without the need to cut and remove the skin. The incision is made on the inside of the eyelid, through which we reduce the amount of adipose tissue.
The operation usually takes about 90 minutes.
Lower eyelid surgery offers many advantages, most of which are aesthetic in nature. However, in some exceptional situations, it is not uncommon for the correction of the lower eyelids to become an appropriate solution for the treatment of problems related to eye health.
These are the following benefits of blepharoplasty:
One of the primary reasons why our clients would undergo lower eyelid correction is the elimination of excess skin, muscles and fat that are responsible for the appearance of dark circles, sagging skin bags and sagging eyelids.
Asymmetrical eyelids are a condition in which one eyelid hangs higher than the other eyelid, creating obvious accentuation and inequality. With lower blepharoplasty, we successfully equalize the shape and tightness of the eyelids, giving you a symmetrical and balanced view.
The appearance of dry eyes can be associated with weakened lower eyelids that can no longer moisturize the eyeball. This condition can result in itching, burning and other forms of irritation.
Dry eyes can also be associated with paralysis of the nerves in the face that prevent the production of tears. With lower eyelid surgery, we can reduce these irritations and help in proper moisturizing of the eyes.
The effects of lower eyelid surgery can last for 10-15 years. The effects can be longer than this period if you eat a healthy diet, avoid smoking, and moderately expose yourself to sunlight.

Preparation for lower blepharoplasty may include several guidelines and steps to ensure a safe and successful procedure.
These are some of the basic steps we take before the procedure:
Before the procedure, we are sure to conduct consultations where we explain the procedure risks and expected recovery.
In addition to information about the procedure itself, we will talk to you about possible previous experiences of the procedure in order to take appropriate precautions in advance.
After the consultation, we perform a face and eye examination in order to better adjust the procedure of the operation. We will check if there is an asymmetry of the eyes and what is the degree of sagging of the lower eyelid.
Since each operation is individual, there is a possibility to take a photo of the face in order to make a certain scheme and concept that we will be guided by during the operation.
Since the correction of the lower eyelids is one of the types of aesthetic surgery, it is necessary to perform blood tests.
These instructions contain several guidelines that you should follow to achieve optimal surgery results.
Some of these guidelines include avoiding smoking and alcohol consumption, avoiding medications that affect blood clotting, but also maintaining hygiene to avoid infections and similar complications after the procedure.
By following these guidelines, we reduce the chances of developing complications during the procedure and during recovery.
Upon arrival at the polyclinic, we will place you in a recovery room. There you can change your clothes and prepare for the procedure.
Lower blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia, sedation or general anesthesia, which depends on several factors that you will be familiar with. Before going to the operating room, one of our surgeons will visit you and introduce you to the procedure once again.
With a relaxed conversation, we try to get rid of all possible fears and prejudices that you may have developed since the last examination. We are aware that you will undergo a surgical procedure in a few minutes, so we do everything to make you as comfortable as possible.
When we prepare the operating room, you will be invited. After cleaning and disinfecting the desired area, we will apply local anesthesia to the area of the lower eyelid and the surrounding area.
If the lower blepharoplasty is performed as part of a complete facelift, we will use general anesthesia. When the anesthesia begins to work, we begin the operation.
After the stitches are placed, we can keep you in the recovery room for a short time. However, in most cases, we usually discharge you for home care right away.
The recovery period after the correction of the lower eyelids is very short, and you can return to daily activities the next day.
The initial healing phase can last between 7 and 10 days. During this phase , it is necessary to be careful and not too harsh when washing your face. Any sudden movement or rough touch can dislodge scabs from the eyelid, creating new sores.
After 7 days, you will visit us again to remove your stitches. Although you will be able to notice changes even then, full results are visible around 30 days after the procedure when the swelling calms down and when the stitch marks disappear. Until complete recovery, regular use of sunscreen and the use of sunglasses are necessary.
As with any surgical procedure, including the correction of the lower eyelids, it is possible to develop complications that can prolong recovery and, in the worst case, require a repeat of the procedure.
These are some of the most common risks associated with this surgery:
In the case of poor suture connection or poor hygiene after the procedure, there is a possibility of bacterial penetration and the development of infection. This issue is usually treated with antibiotics.
Bleeding after the procedure is rare, but possible.
In case of heavier bleeding, it is necessary to repair the wound with new stitches, and sometimes repeat the operation.
Swelling is a normal issue that passes a few days after the surgery is performed. Swelling of the eye is a reaction by which the body tries to supply the treated area with nutrients as soon as possible for faster recovery.
After correction of the lower eyelids, tear production may temporarily decrease. This condition occurs due to the pressure of the swollen tissue on the glands that secrete tears.
A condition like this is solved by using artificial tears, and once the swelling disappears, your eye will be able to secrete tears again and moisturize on its own.
Eye asymmetry can occur due to the surgeon’s miscalculation, but also during the wound repair itself after surgery.
In the event that the wound has not healed properly, there is a possibility that the lower eyelid will become much more pronounced, creating asymmetry. Then it is necessary to repeat the operation.
Although a rare occurrence, the possibility of blurred or double vision after surgery is not excluded. Such complications occur due to uneven eyelid movements, but also the pressure of swelling on the eyeball.
In addition, the appearance of eye crusts and other mucous fluids can make it difficult to see for the first few days after the procedure.
At the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic, we have gathered a team of experienced plastic surgeons who will make sure to correct any irregularities or asymmetries on your body.
Of the aesthetic procedures in the facial area, we especially highlight the EXTENDED LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY, which can be performed separately, but also as part of a complete facelift or by adding LIPO TRANSFER AND MORPHEUS 8 procedures.
Our professional approach, the possibility of applying different techniques, long-lasting results, but also the affordable price of lower eyelid correction have made this procedure one of the most effective surgical procedures.
