Pilonidal sinus surgery – prevent complications in time

Pilonidal sinus, also known as an ingrown hair cyst, is a condition that occurs when ingrown hairs in the coccyx area cause inflammation and the formation of purulent channels. Although it may seem harmless at first, an untreated pilonidal sinus can cause pain, infection, and severe discomfort when sitting and moving.

If you notice redness, painful pimples, or discharge from the coccyx region, timely diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing complications.

At the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic , we use minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laser surgery of the pilonidal sinus, which ensures faster recovery and reduces the risk of recurrence.

What is the pilonidal sinus?

The pilonidal sinus is a cyst or abscess in the coccyx area that occurs when ingrown hairs linger under the skin and cause inflammation and infection.

The inflammatory process leads to the formation of purulent channels (fistulas) that can become painful and chronic over time, with constant discharge with an unpleasant odor.

The main symptoms of pilonidal sinus include:

  • Pain and swelling in the coccyx area.
  • Redness and sensitivity to touch.
  • Pus or blood discharge with an unpleasant odor.
  • Difficulty sitting or moving for long periods of time.

Untreated pilonidal sinus can spread the infection over time and cause new fistulas to form, making it difficult to perform daily activities such as sitting, walking, and sleeping.

Who is prone to developing a pilonidal sinus?

The pilonidal sinus most often affects men, but it can also occur in women. The main risk factors include:

  • Prolonged sitting – office work, driving a truck, or jobs that require prolonged sitting increase the risk.
  • Increased sweating – physical activity and high temperatures can cause irritation and infection of the hair follicles.
  • Dense hairiness in the coccyx area – increases the likelihood of ingrown hairs.
  • Being overweight – wrinkled skin on the buttocks can hinder hair growth and increase the risk of infection.

If you notice the first symptoms, a timely reaction can prevent the development of more serious complications and the need for major surgery.

What does the preparation for pilonidal sinus surgery look like?

Preparation for the operation is simple and includes:

  • Taking mild laxatives – to ensure morning bowel movements.
  • Arrival on an empty stomach – it is not recommended to consume food and drink on the day of the operation.
  • Accompanying arrival – due to possible discomfort when walking after the procedure.

During consultations at the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic, our experts will guide you through the entire procedure and give you individualized recommendations for a faster and easier recovery.

How is pilonidal sinus surgery performed?

Depending on the stage of infection, pilonidal sinus surgery can be performed in two ways:

1. Acute phase – incision and drainage

If an acute abscess is present, the surgeon will make a minor incision to remove pus and reduce inflammation. The wound is not sutured, but left to heal naturally.

2. Chronic phase – surgical removal of the sinuses

If the inflammations recur and a permanent duct is formed, a wider excision of the entire pilonidal sinus is carried out. The wound is also left open to heal naturally.

At the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic , we use laser technology that enables:

  • Faster recovery – reduction of postoperative pain and shortening of healing time.
  • Minimal trauma to the surrounding tissue – reduces the risk of sinus redevelopment.

Recovery after pilonidal sinus surgery

After the operation, the patient is discharged for home care on the same day, with the recommendation to avoid prolonged sitting and adhere to postoperative guidelines.

Recovery time:

  • Return to daily activities: 3-5 days after the procedure.
  • Complete wound healing: 3-4 weeks.

Recommendations for a faster recovery

  • Avoid prolonged sitting – short walks are recommended to prevent irritation of the wound.
  • Proper nutrition – consumption of foods rich in fiber to prevent constipation.
  • Drinking enough fluids2-2.5 liters of water a day helps with digestion.
  • Regular hygiene of the operated area – to prevent infection.
  • Do not delay bowel movements – to avoid pressure on the operated area.

For the prevention of recurrence of the pilonidal sinus, we recommend laser hair removal of the gluteal region, which eliminates hair regrowth and reduces the possibility of recurrence.

I did rhinoplasty along with face tight treatment and the results were more than satisfactory. The guys (Boris and Peter) did everything at the same time, very professionally and in the shortest possible timeframe. I was out of tampons in 2 days, and my bruise recovery does not take longer than 7 days. Very gentle […]

I had unwittingly been suffering from hypopnea for nearly a decade. I did some research and I selected this clinic because it was located in a country where I have many friends. I had already been treated for this by a different physician in Canada, a surgery was done in my nose to remove an […]

For so long I was dissatisfied with the breathing and the appearance of my nose. Of course the first step was to google rhinoplasty and read comments on forums of the people who did it in Croatia. That did not help because the amount of negative experiences only scared me. But I also read that […]

A month ago, I was on a lip lift with Dr. Filipović. The result is fantastic, as was the experience of consultation and surgery. The doctor and nurses are professional and approachable and inspire confidence. The lip lift turned out great and looks natural, but it’s a big enough change that it affected the look […]
