65% of migraine sufferers are misdiagnosed
An aura (a transient neurological deficit in the form of speech disorders, visual disturbances, and sensory or motor deficits) may occur before the headache.
The prevalence of migraine in the general population in Europe is about 15 % . Migraine is three times more common in women (17%) than in men (6%). It can begin in childhood, and in 90% of patients it occurs before the age of forty.
The cause of migraine is unknown.
Migraine is a complex neurological disorder that can have many different symptoms, the most important of which is headache .
However, to be diagnosed with migraine, you should have at least some of these symptoms including:
Migraine symptoms often first appear in childhood , adolescence , or early adulthood . Women are affected more at all ages by a ratio of 3 to 1.
Migraines usually last from 4 to 72 hours if nothing is done. The frequency of headaches varies from person to person – they can be rare (once a year), or occur several times a month .
A migraine is defined as a headache attack – a severe throbbing pain or pulsating sensation, usually on only one side of the head. It can last for hours or days and be so severe that it prevents any activity.
Warning symptoms known as auras may occur before or with the headache in only 25% of patients . They include flashes of light, visual field defects, and tingling on one side of the head, arm, or leg.
Not all migraines are the same, in fact there are several different types. Migraines with or without aura are the two primary forms, but there are also subtypes, such as abdominal migraines, chronic migraines, and others.
In addition, the range of symptoms varies from patient to patient, even from one migraine attack to another. Therefore, we can argue that every migraine is different, it is not just a severe headache and as such is not comparable between patients.
Statistically, 65% of migraine sufferers are misdiagnosed , forcing them to live with persistent pain and suffer much longer than they should.
Any patient who experiences some or all of the symptoms of migraine more than once should request a referral to a specialist or contact the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic and arrange an examination.
Migraine is the result of complex pathophysiological events that occur in the brain. The real cause of migraine, however, is stimulation of peripheral sensory nerves that surround the blood vessels of the brain , or those located in the face and neck. The dilation of the blood vessels or the compression of the nerve generates pain signals that travel to the brain, causing a migraine attack.
Some believe that many migraines are caused by stress or depression, which studies have shown to be false. In most patients, stress and/or depression are the result of their migraines, which is perhaps why they are believed to always go together.
Of course, stress can be a trigger for a migraine attack, as can other factors such as poor diet, changes in air pressure, menstrual cycle, and a host of other individual factors.

For the last 10 years, our top medical team, led by Dr. Peter JFM Lohuis and assistant professor Boris Filipović, Ph.D. has developed and is applying a new, minimally invasive surgical procedure for severe headaches, such as migraines.
About 15 years ago in the USA, it was discovered quite by chance that a plastic surgery procedure called endoscopic brow lift could reduce severe pain in chronic migraines.
Our team participated in writing a professional book on this topic: Atlas of Surgical Therapy for Migraine and Tension-Type headache , which was published in 2020.
Surgical treatment of headaches is based on reducing pressure on sensory nerves endoscopically, popularly called migraine surgery . Endoscopic performance of the operation means minimal invasiveness and rapid recovery for the patient.
At the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic, we strive to find the right solution for treating headaches, including migraines.
Whether it’s medication therapy, injections, or surgery, our goal is for you to leave the clinic without a headache and ready to carry out your daily activities without unnecessary discomfort.
