Sinus headache

Sinus headache is caused by a disease within the nasal sinuses and cavities – deviation of the septum in contact with the mucous membrane, chronic sinusitis, etc.

However, many who assume that the pain comes from sinusitis are actually suffering from migraine or tension headache.

The signs and symptoms of a sinus headache – regardless of the cause – can be:

• pain, pressure, a feeling of fullness in the cheeks, above the eyes and in the forehead,
• increased pain when bending forward and lying down,
• stuffy nose,
• weariness
• painful upper teeth.

• chronic sinusitis,
• Concha bulosa – anatomical alteration of the median turbinate

Migraines and sinus headaches are easily confused, as the symptoms of headaches can overlap:

• Both of them are amplified when bending forward,
• Migraines can be accompanied by a variety of nasal signs and symptoms – including nasal congestion, pressure on the face, and clear, watery nasal discharge.

Some studies have shown that almost 90% of patients who have turned to the doctor for sinus headaches suffer from migraines.

However, there are some important differences:

• sinus headache is usually not accompanied by nausea and vomiting,
• sinus headache usually occurs after a cold,
• sinus headache is accompanied by thick, mucus from the nose, impaired sense of smell, pain in the neck and upper jaw,
• Headaches caused by sinus disease often last for days, or even longer, while migraines usually last a few hours or a day or two.

Therapy will depend largely on the cause of the headache and will include:

• Medicine
• surgery of the nasal septum,
• Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS).
