Bladder overfilling
Overflow incontinence is also called “overflow incontinence“, and it occurs due to overfilling of the bladder. A large volume of residual urine in the bladder causes an increase in pressure inside the bladder, which at one point overrides the ability of the sphincter to retain urine and causes urine leakage/incontinence.
Those who have overflow incontinence usually present with symptoms of extremely reduced urinary stream, incomplete or unsuccessful emptying, and frequent or even continuous urination.
Overflow incontinence is usually caused by two conditions:
Hypotonic or atonic bladder – reduced bladder contractility
Obstruction of urine excretion
Physical examination often reveals an enlarged bladder, and measuring the volume of urine after emptying reveals a large volume of urine contained in the bladder. Patients also show low urine flow on urodynamic tests.
Common symptoms of overflow urinary incontinence are dripping, an overactive bladder and a bladder with poor elasticity.
Pain may not always be present, but the amount of urine retained is usually significantly higher than the usual bladder capacity, which is 300-600 ml.
