Neurological disorder of spasm of the larynx (larynx)
Spastic dysphonia (SD) is a neurological disorder of the larynx (larynx). These symptoms occur only when speaking.
There are two basic types:
• Abductive SD: convulsions lead to sudden abduction (opening) of the vocal cords during speech with audible expulsion of air.
• Adductor SD: spasms lead to a sudden closure (spasm) of the orifice, creating a strained/wheezing voice.
Initial treatment of SD involves periodic injections of botulinum toxin A – Botox into the larynx. Voice therapy has been shown to improve the results of Botox injections, and it can also extend the time period between injections.
