An examination that extends the life of your vocal cords
Laryngomicroscopy is the best insight into the condition of the airways and the structure of the vocal cords and larynx.
Our vocal cords are like an instrument – the better you maintain it, the nicer the melody will sound.
Straining when speaking or frequent hoarseness are the first symptoms that indicate poorer function of your vocal cords. Therefore, if you want to give your vocal cords the help they deserve, laryngomicroscopy is the solution for you.
By making an appointment for an examination, we at the LF Polyclinic give you a clear diagnosis and therapy for your worn vocal cords.
Laryngomicroscopy is used to identify and at the same time be able to treat throat formations. This method is known for being used for a variety of purposes:
By making a diagnosis in time, we see the problems you have in your throat – whether it is worn vocal cords, thickened tissue or recognizing a foreign body.
If we suspect more serious problems, such as cancer, we decide to have a biopsy of the vocal cords.
A biopsy is a procedure by which a doctor takes a tissue sample during laryngomicroscopy for further analysis.
If we at the clinic believe that the best solution is surgery, laryngomicroscopy will serve as an aid in eliminating the difficulties for which you came to us.
Due to its polyvalent application, laryngomicroscopy is considered the best method when identifying, removing and treating complications in your vocal cords and the surrounding area inside the throat.
The advantage of laryngomicroscopy is the possibility of a detailed examination of the larynx. With a detailed examination, the surgeon can notice small changes that are enough to identify complications in your vocal cords.
Changes in the vocal cords, also known as lesions, are the main cause of hoarseness, and we can divide them into the following:
In case we recognize any of the listed lesions, surgical removal is considered the best solution.
After the examination, the surgeon can take a tissue sample for further analysis and introduce you to the treatment and recovery procedure after the procedure.
You’ve been having trouble with your voice for a while; Your loved ones can no longer recognize you when you talk to them on the phone, and for every word you say, you have to strain your muscles more and more.
You have decided that the best solution for you would be laryngomicroscopy, but you still do not know what you need to do before the examination.
If it is only an examination, the only thing you need to adhere to is to avoid eating 12 hours before arriving at the polyclinic.
But if it is laryngomicroscopy as one of the procedures of the operation, then before the procedure you should appear with the following documents:
Once you submit these findings to us, we have everything we need to proceed with the procedure. In case you have allergies to some of the materials used during the procedure, such as latex, be sure to let us know.
Given that the examination is performed under general anesthesia, you will be asked to fill out an anesthesia form, within which you will be explained in detail the application, effect and possible side effects of anesthesia.
Three days before the operation, you should not consume blood-thinning tablets, such as Andol or Aspirin. This can cause increased bleeding and slower recovery after the procedure.
The procedure before the operation will be explained to you once again by our staff after the examination.
Upon entering the operating room, you will lie on your back, and your head will be thrown back and fastened so that it does not move during the operation. To prevent damage to them, mouthguards will be placed on your teeth.
After applying general anesthesia, a laryngoscope, an apparatus that falls under the category of hard endoscopes, is placed on your chest.
At the very top of the endoscope, a microscope is placed that allows binocular vision with a 400mm objective, which allows a detailed and clear view of the observation area.
When each segment of the apparatus is placed, the surgeon can begin the operation. Standard tools such as grippers or scissors are used during the operation, and the procedure can also be performed with a LASER (diode/CO2).
The length of the procedure varies depending on the type of procedure – if it is only an examination, the procedure lasts between 30-45 minutes, and the operation depends on the size and location of the formation to be removed.
From the laryngomicroscopy itself, complications are rare. After the anesthesia, you can only feel a slight numbness of the tongue due to the placed endoscope and possibly less damage to the teeth and gums.
Other complications may arise as a result of the action of LASER or some other method of surgery: difficulty swallowing, redness of the pharynx or difficulty breathing. However, such complications are rare.
If it was only an examination, you return to normal two hours after the general anesthesia has subsided. However, if it is an operation, it is recommended to stay in the polyclinic, but not longer than one day.
For the first seven days after surgery, you will be asked to talk as little as possible, and if the surgery has affected a larger area, not to talk at all. Avoid any rinsing and gargling, as well as coughing, as such procedures can prolong recovery.
Hoarseness after surgery is a normal side effect, and it passes in a period of 3-4 weeks.
Depending on the severity of the procedure, we can also recommend moderate physical activity as one of the methods of faster recovery. Physical activity will bring more oxygen and nutrients to the wound site, and recovery will be faster as a result.
In addition to inherited characteristics, external factors have a great effect. Smoking, alcohol, exposure to dry air and consumption of cold drinks increase the risk of getting sick.
Due to excessive strain on the vocal cords during their careers, many singers have also undergone vocal cord surgeries. In other words, be aware that even too much singing, yelling and talking is not good for the health of your “instruments”.
Whether it’s an operation or just a routine check-up, we are aware that your vocal cords are the main tool in communicating with people. That is why we take every complication you come to us seriously and strive to provide the best possible diagnosis and treatment.
