TINNITUS – STOP THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROBLEMS THAT DISRUPT YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE

Tinnitus is a phenomenon that each of us has experienced at least once in our lives.

In most cases, tinnitus does not pose major health problems, but the frequent repetition of such circumstances could become irritating in your everyday life, but it could also signal the development of more serious problems.

At the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic, we conduct a series of diagnostic examinations to determine the source of the forest and offer a wide range of treatments for the adequate treatment of this phenomenon.

WHAT IS TINNITUS AND HOW TO RECOGNIZE IT?

Tinnitus is synonymous with tinnitus.

In most cases, tinnitus can be an instant phenomenon that passes in a few seconds, hours, days, but it can also be permanent so that it stays for life.

Tinnitus does not only involve ringing in ears, although this form of occurrence is the most common. This diagnosis can also manifest itself in the form of buzzing, throbbing, crackling, and even developing unpleasant pains that could disrupt your daily life.

The intensity of tinnitus can vary from person to person – sometimes the noise is short-lived, and sometimes it can last or repeat repeatedly throughout the day.

Regardless of the intensity of the action, if you notice that tinnitus is disturbing your concentration or causing discomfort, it is necessary to seek a professional opinion to stop this phenomenon at the earliest possible stage of development.

Although tinnitus can affect people at any stage of life, this phenomenon more often affects the elderly, mostly due to the onset and development of other diseases related to the functioning of the circulatory system or ear injuries.

In medical practice, there are two types of tinnitus:

  • Subjective tinnitus

Subjective tinnitus is a term used to describe a noise that can only be heard by an individual. A murmur occurs without any external stimulus, often as a result of changes in the ear, either due to an injury or a congenital anomaly.

  • Objective tinnitus

Objective tinnitus is characterized by a murmur created by the circulatory tissue near the ear. In extreme cases, tinnitus can even be heard by a doctor. It can be recognized by the synchronized rhythm of the heartbeat, often accompanied by a pulsating sound.

WHAT CAUSES TINNITUS?

Tinnitus can be caused by the following phenomena:

  • Hearing impairment

Hearing impairment can lead to tinnitus.

  • Disorders of the circulatory system near the ear

The work of the circulatory system near the ear is most often disrupted due to injuries that can restrict blood flow and create pressure on a certain area of the ear. Injuries can also cause spasm of the ear muscles, which is why pulsations and frequent buzzing are possible.

  • Medicines

Certain medications, such as Aspirin, contain compounds that can directly affect the occurrence of tinnitus. Some of these compounds also include acetylsalicylic acid, the presence of which has been reported in over 200 drugs.

  • Pathologies in the central nervous system

Diseases such as tumors or some form of neurological disease can disrupt blood flow through the ear and thus cause phenomena such as noises, buzzing and pulsations.

  • Systemic disorders

Thyroid disorders or anemia can cause tinnitus due to a heart rhythm that deviates from normal. Rapid heartbeat, typical of hyperthyroidism, can increase blood flow, cause higher blood pressure and put pressure on peripheral parts of the body such as the ear.

  • Wax accumulations

Wax is a natural protection against external influences produced by our body. However, wax buildup can obstruct the ear canal over time and create additional pressure, which can result in noises and buzzing.

  • High blood pressure

Tinnitus is a typical symptom of high blood pressure. It is often accompanied by a feeling of dizziness and an inability to distinguish sounds from the environment due to the intensity of the buzzing.

  • By exposure to noise

Exposure to noise, such as frequent concerts or staying in noisy rooms, can leave a mark on your ears. Tinnitus often manifests itself after such events as a result of a change in the environment and possible irritation of the eardrum.

  • Unhealthy diet

Frequent consumption of foods rich in refined sugars can cause obstructions in blood vessels, creating high blood pressure that can also be reflected in tinnitus.

By recognizing these circumstances, you can prevent the development of tinnitus in time, which is why regular physical examinations are necessary, regardless of age and health condition that may seem to be at an optimal level.

HOW IS TINNITUS DIAGNOSED?

At the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic, we perform complete audiological diagnostics to determine if there is a pathology or some other physical disorder that could be the cause of tinnitus.

An audiological examination for tinnitus usually involves a series of procedures to determine the presence and characteristics of tinnitus, which is not caused by external sound sources.

The diagnostic procedure most often includes:

History

The doctor will first conduct a conversation with the patient to get an insight into the existing complaints. This includes questions about the type of sound a person hears, when it occurs, the duration of symptoms, and possible causes and factors that may contribute to tinnitus.

Clinical examination

A doctor may perform an ear exam to rule out obvious causes of tinnitus such as infections, cerumen plugs, or other problems with the outer ear.

Audiometry

This test evaluates the patient’s hearing. A person will wear headphones and respond to sound signals of different frequencies and intensities. This helps identify any hearing loss or other abnormalities in hearing.

Testing the eardrum

Measuring the reactions of the eardrum to changes in pressure in the ear can help detect middle ear disorders.

Tinnitus pitch matching

This test helps determine the frequency of sound that a person perceives as tinnitus. The person compares their tinnitus with the tones generated by the doctor to determine if it matches certain frequencies.

Other psychophysical assessments

Other psychophysical assessments can also be checked by a doctor. In a conversation with the person, the doctor can gain insight into the levels of stress and anxiety when tinitis becomes present.

A stronger intensity of noise or buzzing can significantly affect a person’s behavior, whether it is due to a lack of concentration or a loss of patience caused by other external factors.

HOW TO STOP TINNITUS?

Tinnitus treatment may primarily focus on changing habits and treating diseases that may have caused tinnitus.

This can refer to changes in eating habits, taking care of blood pressure, regular blood count checks, and regulating potential thyroid problems.

However, if tinnitus is still present after the prevention measures have been taken, it is necessary to seek professional help in order to successfully treat tinnitus.

Some of the treatment methods include:

Psychotherapy

  • Exposure therapy

This therapy may involve gradually exposing the patient to sounds to reduce sensitivity to tinnitus. It can also include the habituation technique, during which the patient gradually develops less reactivity to the noises, buzzes and pulsations caused by tinnitus.

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)

This type of therapy focuses on changing the negative thoughts and behaviors associated with tinnitus. Patients learn how to better cope with the stress, fear, and anxiety associated with tinnitus. The goal is to change the response to tinnitus, reduce emotional reactivity and improve the emotional state of the patient.

Sound masking

This technique involves the use of noises, music, or other soothing sounds to mask tinnitus. The goal is to reduce the perception of tinnitus so that the patient pays less attention to the sound itself. This type of therapy has proven to be extremely effective for better sleep, mostly because the severity of tinnitus occurs when the person is in complete silence.

Drug treatment

  • Anti-anxiety medications or antidepressants

If tinnitus is associated with anxiety or depression, your doctor may recommend medications to help manage these symptoms. These medications can help improve the emotional state of the patient.

  • Medications to improve circulation

In some cases, tinnitus can be associated with circulatory problems in the ear. Medications that improve blood circulation, such as vasodilators, may be recommended.

I did rhinoplasty along with face tight treatment and the results were more than satisfactory. The guys (Boris and Peter) did everything at the same time, very professionally and in the shortest possible timeframe. I was out of tampons in 2 days, and my bruise recovery does not take longer than 7 days. Very gentle […]

For so long I was dissatisfied with the breathing and the appearance of my nose. Of course the first step was to google rhinoplasty and read comments on forums of the people who did it in Croatia. That did not help because the amount of negative experiences only scared me. But I also read that […]

A month ago, I was on a lip lift with Dr. Filipović. The result is fantastic, as was the experience of consultation and surgery. The doctor and nurses are professional and approachable and inspire confidence. The lip lift turned out great and looks natural, but it’s a big enough change that it affected the look […]
