React in time and take care of the health of your urinary system
Urological problems are more common than you think, and they are equally present in both men and women.
Whether it’s the inability to retain urine, poor prostate function, or disorders caused by bacterial and viral infections, urinary tract diseases can seriously impair your quality of life, and sometimes even jeopardize your general health.
Urological problems often do not receive enough attention, and the resulting problems are often ignored or described as normal. However, no matter how harmless they may seem, disorders in the functioning of the urinary tract should not be ignored.
Taking care of your urinary tract health should be one of your priorities, especially if you’re in your more mature years.
That is why going for a specialist urological examination is the first step towards solving potential urological problems and enabling the proper functioning of the urinary system.
If you notice or suspect any of the following phenomena, we advise you to seek professional help as soon as possible to find out the cause of the disorder and give a therapy that will eliminate them:
An examination by a urologist can detect these phenomena in a timely manner, and the earlier you come for an examination, the lower the chances of developing the disorder.
The following tests are typical for an examination by a urologist:
The goal of the anamnesis is to define potential causes of urological problems. Existing diseases, previous consumption of medication and your lifestyle habits are taken into account.
As part of the medical history, the IPSS (International Prostate Symptom Score) is also filled out, a questionnaire with which we quantify your symptoms in order to provide an appropriate diagnosis, but also to monitor the course of treatment.
Due to possible discomfort, a digitorectal examination of the prostate often causes disapproval in many men. However, this type of examination is one of the key when it comes to assessing the health of your prostate.
The urologist will first put on a disposable glove and apply a gel that serves as a lubricant. He will then try to feel the prostate with his fingers through the anus to identify possible abnormalities such as bumps, knots or increased sensitivity to touch.
The examination is relatively short and in most cases painless.
Ultrasound of the prostate gland describes its homogeneity, size and relationship with other surrounding organs. It is very important to do an ultrasound of the prostate while the bladder is filled with urine. After the ultrasound of the prostate is done, the patient goes to urinate and the amount of remaining urine in the bladder is checked.
Depending on the degree of the disorder, it may be necessary to do an ultrasound of the entire urinary tract.
These tests are used to give a precise diagnosis, but also to monitor the course of treatment.
Depending on the type of problem and the assessment of a specialist, in addition to a regular specialist examination, there is a possibility to perform the following tests:
A cystoscopic examination is used to check the patency of the urethra, the size of the prostate and the appearance of the bladder. The examination is performed with a flexible instrument in the presence of local or general anesthesia.
This examination measures the speed of the jet during urination with special equipment. Uroflowmetry is often used to diagnose urinary incontinence.
A biopsy takes part of the prostate tissue, and the procedure is performed under ultrasound control. We look at the obtained sample under a microscope and subject it to various tests in the laboratory to diagnose possible pathologies.
It includes an ultrasound examination of both kidneys, the bladder with an assessment of the remaining urine and an assessment of the size of the prostate.
It includes taking a urethral swab and sending it for microbiological analysis.
We can refer you to laboratory tests when we suspect a urinary tract infection. Tests should also be done if you notice blood in the urine or pain when urinating.
The tests are performed on the basis of the analysis of blood and urine samples. It should be noted that in order to carry out a proper urine culture, it is necessary to bring a sample of the first morning urine.
Some urological problems occur exclusively in men, and some problems are more characteristic of women.
For example, urinary incontinence is more common in women, while disorders such as erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation are related exclusively to men.
Due to the different nature of the disorder, but also the causative agent, at the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic we can opt for different diagnostic examinations.
When it comes to urological examinations in women, which often come to us due to urinary retention problems, we most often perform tests such as uroflow test, cystoscopy, urodynamic examination or ultrasound of the bladder and urethra.
A similar procedure is used during the examination by a urologist in men, but it is still necessary to add a digitorectal examination of the prostate.
Some urological problems can, in addition to impaired health, also cause mental pressure.
Social isolation caused by urinary incontinence, a disturbed partnership due to erectile dysfunction, or fear of a possible diagnosis are just some of the reasons why many avoid starting any conversation, let alone seeking professional help.
At the Lohuis Filipović Polyclinic, we have decided on a special approach. Before going for tests, we conduct consultations where you are free to tell us everything that is bothering you.
We cultivate open dialogue and interaction because we know how much it means to you when someone can listen to you and help you solve your problems.
